The Sycamore Community

Sycamore is located 58 miles west of Chicago and 30 miles southeast of Rockford. While the town maintains its rural character, its proximity to major highways makes it increasingly attractive to business and residents. Sycamore is just five miles north of I-88 and 19 miles south of I-90.

A new commuter train station, taking passengers into Chicago, is located in Elburn, about a 20-minute drive southeast. With a population of just 12,000 residents, Sycamore evokes a "small town" feel complemented by well-established amenities. Strong schools, parks and recreation are part of life in Sycamore.

Location

Heron Creek is located near the stoplight at Plank Road, Peace Road and Route 23 in Sycamore, Illinois. It is approximately 1.5 miles north of Route 64.

History

Tradition runs strong in Sycamore. Originally settled in 1835 as a small community of log cabins surrounded by the scenic Kishwaukee River, it became the DeKalb County seat in 1837.

Education

Heron Creek’s school district is District#427, which includes North Elementary, Sycamore Junior High and Sycamore High School. A site for a future elementary school is located in the Sycamore Creek Development. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2007.

Northern Illinois University is five miles away, giving residence quick access to popular sporting events, concerts, plays and other cultural activities.

Activities

Sycamore's 220 acres of park and recreation land offer year-round family activities. The Sycamore Park District operates a Community Center and owns five parks. Community Park features a challenging 18-hole golf course, 25-meter swimming pool, tennis courts, lighted baseball diamonds, shady picnic sites, scenic walking paths, and lagoon. The Great Western Trail, a bike path built over a former railroad track, is a popular destination winding through 19 miles of trails and ending near St. Charles.

Local attractions include the Stagecoach Theatre, Northern Illinois University Convocation Center and Sandburg Auditorium. Sycamore has earned widespread fame for its unique Pumpkin Festival held the last weekend in October.
